Guide: Add/Remove Strikethrough Text in Google Docs: Guide

Google Docs is an incredibly sleek word processor, offering a compact user interface for a distraction-free writing experience. But sometimes the web app can feel too limited. Unlike rival Microsoft Word, you don’t have access to many text formatting options on the Google Docs toolbar. And a notable omission is the way to add or remove strikethrough text. The strikethrough ability can be incredibly useful if you want the original text to stick with revisions before completing edits. Strikethrough formatting is useful when you’re collaborating on documents with others, especially if you don’t like suggestion mode in Google Docs. Despite the lack of a visible option, Google Docs supports the functionality of the strikethrough text. Let’s start by looking at what to do to add or remove strikethrough text in the Google Docs web app on the desktop. We will then look to do the same on the Google Docs mobile app for Android and iOS.

Add Strikethrough Text – Google Docs

There are a number of ways you can strike through text in Google Docs on Windows and macOS. The first method is to dive into the Format menu of the word processor – it is rather tedious to use when repeating the strikethrough. But it is always better to get a sense of where the formatting option is in the web app. The second method is much faster, especially if you like to use keyboard shortcuts.

1. Use the Format menu

Start by highlighting the portion of the text you want to strike through.

Once you’ve done that, open the Format menu, point to Text and click Strikethrough.

And voila! Google Docs will format the highlighted text accordingly.

Note: Unlike Microsoft Word, you cannot strike out multiple non-contiguous text portions in Google Docs at the same time.

2. Use the keyboard shortcut

Highlight the portion of the text to be formatted. If you are using a Windows PC, run the keyboard shortcut Alt + Shift + 5 to strike through the text. On the Mac, use the Command + Shift + X keystroke instead.

Remove strikethrough – Google Docs

To remove strikethrough text, you must perform the same actions you would use to add them in the first place. You can use the Strikethrough option on the Format menu or its keyboard shortcut to delete strikethrough text.

1. Use the Format menu

Highlight the portion of the strikethrough text.

Open the Format menu, point to Text, and then click Strikethrough.

Google Docs removes the crossed out formatting.

2. Use keyboard shortcuts

Highlight the text, then press Alt + Shift + 5 (Windows) or Command + Shift + X (Mac) to remove the strikethrough formatting.

Strikethrough text in Google Docs on Android and iOS

On the Android and iOS versions of Google Docs, strikethrough text can be easy or slightly complicated, depending on whether you’re using a tablet or a smartphone. If you’re using Google Docs on a tablet (such as an iPad), you’ll most likely see a special strike-through icon (the letter S with a line in the center) at the top of the screen. Highlight the required portion of the text, then tap the strikethrough icon to strikethrough the text.

On smartphones, you need to tap the format icon (the letter A with four lines) in the top right corner of the screen. That should reveal the Strikethrough option – tap it to add strikethrough formatting.

Removing strikethrough from text is similar to adding text: highlight the text, then tap the strikethrough icon at the top of the screen or the strikethrough option in the Format menu.

Strikethrough text – what to look out for

There are two things to keep in mind when crossing out text. First, the text still appears in the final Number of words. If your document must meet a certain number words, you must delete all strikethrough text to get an accurate word count. Second, you can expect to transfer the strikethrough formatting if you plan to convert a document to an alternative file format. However, the TXT format is an exception, where the strikethroughs are missing. Plain text cannot have any formatting, so this is something to be aware of. But for the other output formats that Google Docs supports (DOCX, PDF, EPUB, etc.), don’t worry.

Send your feedback to Google

Striking through text in Google Docs is pretty much seamless once you get the hang of things. But you may not like to dive into the Format menu or run the three-key shortcut every time you add or remove strikethrough text. While there’s nothing you can do to get a special strike through icon on the Google Docs toolbar, it’s best to send your feedback to Google and add a feature request.
