Guide: Add Twitter Search Results To Google Search: Tips and Tutorial
Google Search just got better with some nice algorithm tweaks. But when it comes to real-time search, Google is still lagging behind where Twitter is the uncrowned king. Google did have a spell with it, but it fell through in January when a deal with Twitter fell through. Bing has been leading the way there with its social quest and with the addition of Quora, I think it has managed to add one more star. In the absence of Twitter, you are left with a browser extension to create a Twitter interface, open another tab with Twitter, or a tool like CloudMagic. Just as effective? Yes. But a productivity barrier, because you have to search again for the information you want. What we’re looking for is a seamless way to display Twitter results next to Google search results so I can see them all at a glance. Google may have failed, but a Google Chrome extension has come in to fill one side of the page. If you are looking for real-time Twitter search with your Google search, Hashplug could be the answer. You will not see an icon for it after installing the extension from the Google Web Store. But type in a search and you’ll immediately see a stream of Twitter updates flowing down the right side of the search results page.
As you can see in the screenshot above, the profile picture, handle and name of the Twitter account are displayed. Three Twitter results are displayed by default, but you can scroll down to check out the constantly flowing stream of updates. These are the latest as you can see from the timestamp. Hashplug also gives you the option to Favorite, Retweet or Reply to the tweet from there. These are basically a shortcut to your Twitter profile. Click on any one, and your Twitter page will open up in a separate tab.
A very simple extension, but two things that matter
You will find that Hashplug does not allow you to filter your tweets by language, so you end up with quite a few global languages. Sometimes this can be frustrating because, depending on the time zone, a particular language appears to have a greater presence, requiring you to wait or find a different search route. I wish the developer would add a localization filter if possible. The second trade-off you may have to make is that Hashplug pushes the Knowledge Graph down. If you’re a movie buff like me, and like to search people who are also searched, this can be a small burden (but not very much). Hashplug is simple and unobtrusive. It does one thing, and it does well. Check out the video if you’re more of a visual guy and want to see what the Chrome extension does … Like Hashplug so far? Are you going to visit the Google Web Store?
