Guide: Fix ‘Chrome Autofill Not Working’ Issue

Google Chrome’s ability to automatically enter passwords, payment methods, and addresses makes it a lot easier when browsing online. But what if Chrome no longer does that? You may not see prompts to auto-fill data upeither for certain sites or everywhere you visit which puts a huge damper on things. So, in this post, we will look at ways to fix Chrome Autofill functionality issue not working. There are several factors that can contribute to Chrome Autofill not working on your desktop or mobileBuggy Chrome releases, misconfigured autocomplete settings, corrupt user profiles, and so on can all contribute to the problem. Let’s take a look at several possible troubleshooting solutions that you can apply right away to get Chrome to start auto-fill again automatically.

1. Update Chrome

Chrome is a relatively stable web browser for the most part, but it also comes with its fair share of bugs. Therefore, it is best to rule this out by updating the browser. Newer versions of Chrome fixes known issues and can help fix AutoFill, especially if Chrome has stopped working due to a bug instance. To update Chrome on the desktop, open the Chrome menu, point to Help, then click About Google Chrome. When the browser detects new updates, it will install them automatically.

On Android and iOS, search for ‘chrome’ in the Play Store or the App Store and tap Update to apply the latest Chrome updates, if available.

2. Check the autofill settings

The next up: View your Autofill settings. Chrome automatically fills in three categories of information: passwords, payment methods, and addresses. It is always a good idea to check that Autofill is properly configured for any of these options. Start by opening the Chrome menu. Then click on Settings to bring up the Chrome settings panel. You should then see the AutoFill section, complete with the three categories, in the center of the screen.

If you can’t find it, click AutoFill in the navigation area on the left (available on desktops only) to bring the section into focus.

Passwords

The Passwords section includes an ‘Offer to save passwords’ toggle – make sure it’s turned on. Otherwise, Chrome won’t save your credentials, preventing the browser from filling them in automatically.

Password autocompletion issues can also occur if you’ve prevented Chrome from saving login credentials for certain sites. Scroll through the list of passwords to the Never Saved section. Then you can delete the sites you want Chrome to save (and autofill).

Payment methods

The Payment Methods section features the ‘Save and fill in payment methods’ switch. You must enable it to start autofill for previously saved payment methods and to save (and autofill) new payment methods.

Address and more

The Address and more section offers a toggle labeled “Save and fill out addresses.” Enable it to start autofill for previously saved addresses and to save (and autofill) newer addresses.

3. Check the synchronization settings

If passwords, payment methods, or addresses that you save on a particular device are not displayed up on another for autofill, you need to check your Chrome sync settings for each device. Open the Chrome menu, click or tap Settings, then select Sync and Google services. Follow through Manage what you sync (or Manage sync on the mobile versions).

Make sure that the switches next to ‘Passwords’,’ Addresses, phone numbers and more ‘and’ Payment methods and addresses with Google Pay ‘are turned on.

4. Disable extensions (Windows and macOS)

Autofill may also not work if it conflicts with browser extensions. To confirm, try to use Incognito mode: open the Chrome menu and click New Incognito Window. If autocomplete works in Incognito mode, go back to a normal Chrome window, disable your extensions (go to Chrome menu> Tools> Extensions) and re-enable them one at a time to isolate the problematic extension.

You can also use the built-in ‘Clean up Computer tool (available only in the Windows version of Chrome) to scan and remove malicious Chrome extensions.

5. Clear browsing data

An outdated browser cache can prevent the autofill feature in Chrome from activating, so try clearing it. Go to Chrome settings> Privacy and security> Clear browsing data. Switch to the Advanced tab, select Always and then check the boxes next to ‘Cookies and other site data’ and ‘Cached images and files’. Finally, click on Clear data.

Warning: Do not select the categories ‘Passwords and other login data’ and ‘Autofill form data’. That will permanently delete your passwords and form data. In case of isolated issues, you can also choose to clear the browsing data for just one site. In the Android and iOS versions of Chrome, go to Chrome settings> Privacy> Clear browsing data to clear the browser cache.

6. Create a new user profile (Windows and macOS)

A corrupted user profile can also prevent Chrome from filling in your information automatically. To fix the problem, you have to create a profile from scratch. If you go through the steps below you will lose all locally stored data so make sure to check Chrome sync settings and back again up all forms of data to the Google servers before you start. Step 1: Exit Chrome. Step 2: Go to the location where Chrome stores your user profile data: Windows – Press Windows + R to open Run, then click OK after inserting the following folder path: % UserProfile% AppDataLocalGoogleChromeUser data

macOS – Press Cmd + Spacebar to open Spotlight Search, then press Enter after inserting the following folder path: ~ / Library / Application Support / Google / Chrome Step 3: Right-click the folder labeled Default (which contains your user profile data) and select Rename.

Note: If you have multiple Chrome profiles, they will be listed as Profile 1, Profile 2, Profile 3, and so on. Step 4: Rename the folder to Default.old.

Note: Rather than deleting the folder altogether, it’s best to rename it so that you can create a backupup of the local data, just in case. Step 5: Reopen Chrome and sign in with your Google account information to create a new profile. Autofill should probably work without any issues from now on.

For the most part, problems with Chrome’s autofill feature are relatively easy to fix. But if you are still having problems despite working your way through the troubleshooting tips above you may want to reset Google Chrome.
