Guide: Fix ‘Getting Logged out of Chrome’ Issue
Chrome’s ability to keep you signed in to sites that offer to remember you saves a lot of time that would otherwise be spent on manual sign-ups. And when it comes to web apps like Google Drive, it’s essential to productivity to immediately access available services, even after the browser is reopened. But what if Chrome suddenly stops doing that? In addition to having absolutely no ability to keep you signed in to certain sites, Chrome can also lose contact with your Google account when you close it and restart it. However, it is more than possible to get your browser back on track, so let’s take a look at how to do that. Also read: How to Fix Chrome when not prompted to save password
Check Cookie Options
Chrome features a series of cookie settings, and there are a few that actually force the browser to delete cookie data when you exit. And that, of course, means that sites won’t remember you after they restart the browser. Although these settings are disabled by default, it is always a good idea to double check. Type in a new Chrome tab chrome: // settings / content / cookies in the URL bar and press Enter. You should now see the Cookies screen with multiple cookie management options. Make sure that the option Keep local data only until you exit the browser is disabled.
Scroll down and make sure no sites are listed under Clear on exit. If there are any, tap the Ellipse icon next to an item and select Delete to delete it. Repeat for all listed sites.
Once done, exit the settings screen, log into any site and make sure it remembers your information while doing this. After that, close and open the browser and try to access the site. You still need to log in if the problem was caused by the automatic deletion of cookie data.
Delete browsing history
If you haven’t cleared the Chrome cache in a while, corrupt and outdated site cookies can hamper basic browser functions. So let’s try to remove them from your computer. Do not worry! Nothing should happen to your saved passwords or form data, provided you follow the instructions below. Type in a new Chrome tab chrome: // settings / clearBrowserData in the URL bar and press Enter. You should now see the Clear browsing data popup window.up box. Click the Advanced tab, then use the drop-down menu next to Time frame and select Always. Clear the check boxes next to Browsing history, Cookies and other site data, and Cached images and files. Finally, click on DELETE DATA.
The whole process can take anywhere from ten to twenty seconds. After that, check that everything is working normally. If not, continue. Also read: 7 Tips For privacy and security in Google Chrome
Update Browser
An outdated web browser is another major reason all kinds of weird things happen. While Chrome will automatically update itself in the background, you can never be sure. Let’s see if that’s the case. Open the Settings menu, point to Help and click About Google Chrome.
Chrome is now forced to check for available updates. If there is a new update in the store, the browser will automatically download and install it.
There are a lot of bug fixes included in every Chrome update so it could be that the problem is probably gone for good after this. Otherwise, it’s time to start some serious troubleshooting.
Reset browser profile
Corrupt profile data also prevents Chrome from functioning normally, which is why your browser profile must be completely reset to correct. If you are having specific issues when it comes to staying signed in to your Google account, then you should be sure to make this fix. Note: Resetting your browser profile will erase data such as saved passwords and bookmarks. Make sure to sync your profile information with your Google account so you can get it back later. To access your sync settings, click Settings in the Chrome menu and then click Sync. Step 1: Close Chrome completely and then open File Explorer. Type now % LOCALAPPDATA% GoogleChromeUser data in the location bar and press Enter.
Step 2: Rename the folder with the label Profile 1 to Profile 1 Backup Note: On some computers, you will find the ‘Profile 1’ folder as ‘Default’ instead. If so, just rename it to ‘Default Backupup’. Step 4: Reopen Chrome. The browser should automatically change Profile 1 or Standard folder, which effectively resets your profile. Simply log in to Chrome when prompted, and you should be able to sync your data again.
Did the problem disappear? Are you still signed in to Chrome or other websites after closing and restarting the browser? If things are not back to normal, the next solution is directly below.
Reset the browser
Since resetting your browser profile didn’t get you anywhere, it’s time to reset your entire browser. It is easy to run and solves a lot of problems caused by changed settings and malicious extensions. To remember: Make sure your profile information is synced with your Google account before trying this solution. Step 1: Open the Chrome menu and click Settings.
Step 2: Scroll down to the bottom of the Settings screen and click Advanced.
Step 3: Scroll to the bottom of the screen again and click Reset.
Step 4: On the pop-up box, click Reset again.
Chrome should have the browser on its default settings in seconds. If you were already signed in to Chrome, the reset will not sign you out of your profile. However, all extensions should be deactivated. Go ahead and re-enable them, but leave unknown plugins disabled. Note: To go to the extensions screen, click More tools in the Chrome menu and then Extensions. You now need to check if the browser still keeps you signed in to your Google account and other sites after closing. If so, then that’s great! If not, a complete reinstallation of Chrome is planned.
Reinstall Chrome
Reinstalling Chrome sounds drastic. While it is very tricky to go through, there is nothing difficult about the whole process. And the possibility of getting things back to normal is quite high after a reinstall, so make sure to do this if none of the above solutions work. But before we get started, you need to sync your data and settings with your Google account. Step 1: Quit Chrome, then open the Apps & Features panel from the Start menu.
Step 2: Select Google Chrome and click Remove to remove it from your PC.
Step 3: You uninstalled Chrome, but let’s make sure that all remaining files are also completely removed. To do this, type % LOCALAPPDATA% in an Explorer window and press Enter. Note: You can go one step further and use a tool like CCleaner to completely delete all traces of Chrome before reinstalling the browser. Step 4: Now right click on the folder labeled Google and click Delete.
Step 5: You are now ready to reinstall Google Chrome. Just go to the Chrome download page to do that.
After the reinstallation procedure, log in to Chrome to sync your data. The chances of Chrome not letting you signed into your Google account and other sites are pretty slim from now on. Also read: Top 21 Google Chrome Keyboard Shortcuts
It should be okay now
Hopefully, Chrome will work normally again and all the sites you are logged into will remember you even after you reopen the browser. Usually reconfigure or delete your cookie settings up outdated browsing data fixes things up pretty easily. But if not, then resetting your browser profile or Chrome itself should definitely fix the problem. And even if you can’t, reinstall Chrome as a last resort – hopefully it didn’t get that far! But going so far as to get vital functionality back is all that extra hassle, right? Share your thoughts in comments.
