Guide: Fix ‘Google Drive Won’t Sync on Windows 10’ Issue

You use Google Drive to sync files and folders across all of your devices, but for some reason, Google Drive no longer syncs on a Windows 10 computer. There can be a long list of reasons behind it and it is difficult to pinpoint any of them. Usually, Google Drive keeps all your files and folders in perfect harmony. Once in a blue moon it can be difficult to work as intended. For example, if you upload or share files, they will not appear on your computer. I will walk you through in fixing Google Drive sync error.

1. Pause it

Some users have reported that pausing and restarting Backupup and synchronization helped them to solve the problem. The steps are simple. Click once on the Back iconup and synchronization in the system tray. Click the arrow to show hidden icons if they are not already visible.

Now click on the three-dot menu to reveal the Pause option. It may take a while for it to take effect, after which you should see the Resume option. Click on it to resume synchronization from where it left off. Now you can check if your files are syncing as intended.

2. Start Back-up and sync again

Some users have found that stopping and restarting Backupup and sync helped solve the sync problem with Google Drive. To do this, go to the system tray, click on the sync icon and select the option Backupup and exit sync.

To Back-up and restart sync, simply search for the software in Windows Search and launch it. The icon should be visible again in the system tray. Give it a minute or two to get it to sync and then check.

3. Install Back-up and sync again

Maybe your installed version of the software is old or damaged. To fix this, you need to use Back-up and remove sync from your system by pressing the Windows + I shortcut and clicking Apps.

Select Apps & features in the left menu and search for Back-up and sync in the search bar. When you find it, click it once to reveal the Delete option.

4. Choose Correct account

Many of us use multiple Google accounts to manage our personal and professional information. You must be in the backupand sync software make sure you are signed in to the correct Google account. Most importantly, make sure it’s the same as the one you’re trying to sync files from. Click the Back iconup and sync in the system tray to view the Gmail ID.

You no longer need to delete your old Google account to add a new one. Google now allows users to add up to three Google Drive accounts on the same computer. Just click on Add New Account to start the installation process. Make sure to select a different folder location for each Google Drive account.

5. Sync folder settings

Back-up and Google Drive sync comes with sync settings that allow users to select individual folders to sync with their computer. This is useful if you have large folders with a lot of files that you don’t really need on your system, or if you have limited hard drive space. Maybe some folders have not been checked to sync? Click the Back iconup and sync and select Preferences from the menu.

Select Google Drive on the left and make sure ‘Sync my drive with this computer’ and ‘Sync everything in my drive’ are selected.

If you are using the ‘Sync these folders only’ option, make sure the folder that will not be synced with your computer is selected here. Click OK when you are ready to save the settings.

6. Firewall settings

Firewalls are there to protect your system from malware and other forms of cyber attacks. Sometimes Firewall acts like an overprotective parent and goes into an aggressive mode to prevent Backupup and sync function normally. Launch Settings by pressing Windows + I. buttonSearch for Firewall in the search bar.

Click Allow an app through Windows Firewall. You will now see a list of all apps and services that are allowed / not allowed. Search for Back-up and sync and enable it under both the private and public columns.

If you are using an antivirus program, please check the settings carefully to make sure that both Google Drive and Backupup and sync are whitelisted (allowed).

7. Run as administrator

Another reason why Google Drive does not sync on Windows 10 is the lack of user account administrator privileges. Windows allows users to create multiple accounts, each with different rights and access to resources. It is possible that Back-up and sync does not have administrative rights necessary to function properly.

Use Windows search to find Backupup and sync and right-click it to select Run as administrator. That gives Google Drive full admin rights and permissions to operate without any issues.

8. Change the proxy settings

If you are using a proxy to connect to your Google Drive account, the sync may not be able to use it. To check if this is the problem, click the Backup iconup and sync in the system tray and click Preferences.

Select Settings on the left and click Network Settings.

Under Proxy Settings, click Direct Connection and click OK to save the settings. This will tell Google to bypass proxy settings.

If you want to continue using proxy settings, I recommend that you check out the official list of hosts and ports that Google recommends users add to their firewall and proxy settings.

9. Delete the desktop.ini file

When Google Drive cannot sync files to your computer, the resulting error is logged in a file called desktop.ini, which is hidden by default. Once Windows OS has generated it (specific to each folder) Drive will not sync any files you add afterwards until you fix the error. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder where the files will not be synchronized. To view hidden files, click Options under the View tab and click Change folder and search options.

From the View tab in the resulting popup, selectup “Show hidden files, folders, and drives” and click Save.

Go back to the folder to check if the desktop.ini file is present and delete it if it is. Refresh and check if Google Drive sync is working or not.

10. File size and name length

Google Drive offers 15 GB of free storage space. Do you have enough space left on your Drive to sync files? Click the Backup system tray icon againup and sync to check the available free space.

Are you trying to sync a file with a name longer than 255 characters? This can be problematic because Microsoft does not allow files or folders to be created with names longer than the specified limit. If so, rename the file to something shorter and try again.

Google, let that sync

Google Drive sync error should be resolved by using one or more of the above mentioned methods. There is no need to look for alternatives just because something is not working.
