Guide: Fix ‘Messenger Not Working’ Issue on iPhone

More than 2.7 billion people use Facebook Messenger despite growing privacy concerns. Chances are, most of the people you know are using Messenger. That makes it a popular platform to communicate and keep in touch. Everything is fine until Messenger stops working on your iPhone. Several users have reported experiencing various issues with Messenger over the years. Some common complaints include app crashes, not being able to send or receive messages, app freezing, etc. We’ve come up with a few helpful ways to fix these errors and will cover them in this post. Try each solution until it is resolved.

1. Update the iOS

iOS is a smooth one mobile OS, and for the most part, works perfectly. However, it is not bug-free so it is a good idea to update to the latest version. Apple makes it easier to update your operating system. Open Settings and tap General under Software update.

That’s where you can check for new updates. There is also an option for automatic updates that you can enable.

Start your phone and check again.

2. Close Background apps

Depending on the make and model of your iPhone and the number of apps you have open in the background, your iPhone may have a memory problem. Not enough RAM to support the functions of another open app. Especially Messenger, which is known to use quite a lot of resources. Close all other apps to free up resources and try to use Messenger again.

3. Restart Messenger

A simple one trick can sometimes help. Since there is no way to clear cache or data on iPhones like we can do on Androids, we will just close the app and restart it. If your iPhone features a physical home button, press it twice to see all open apps. Wipe up on an app to close it.

If no home button, wipe up from the bottom of the screen to view all open apps, long press Messenger to reveal a red ‘-‘ icon and press to close it.

4. Restart the iPhone

There are two ways to reboot your iPhone. One of them is the usual way you hold down the lock / power button button until you see the option ‘slide to turn off’. The second way is to perform a hard reboot. Again, if you are running an old model with the home button, press the power button and home button together and hold it until you see the Apple logo flashing on the screen. Can last up up to 10 seconds.

If you’re rocking a newer model the steps will vary slightly. Press the volume up button press the volume down once button once, and finally, press and hold the power button button until the iPhone reboots and you see the familiar Apple logo. If the normal restart method does not resolve the Messenger operation problem, try rebooting.

5. Down Detector

Several Facebook services have experienced an outage in the past. Messenger is no different. Down Detector is a useful site for checking if Messenger, or any of the other hundreds of services, is down.

Just click on the link below and view the map. You can also filter by country on the right. It too features a list of all the times Messenger was disabled in the past. That only happened last week. There is also a live outage map. Visit Down Detector

6. Log out and log back in

Unfortunately. Messenger does not have an option to log out. Facebook doesn’t want you to leave their platform, but this is not the way to go. You need to open the Facebook app or visit the site instead. In the app, click the menu icon at the bottom right and tap Settings to display a drop-down menu. Select Settings here. Tap Security and log in under Security.

You will now see a list of all the places where you are logged into Facebook and Messenger. Tap the menu icon on the right to select the Sign out option next to the Messenger item.

Facebook has made it incredibly difficult to perform a simple function like logging out of an app. That’s not cool.

7. Reinstall Messenger

The files associated with Messenger may be damaged. There is no way to know for sure which is why the whole process is called troubleshooting! Long press the Messenger icon until it starts shaking. That animation always looked weird to me.

Press the small ‘x’ icon to delete the app. Go to App Store and download Messenger again. Please note that you will have to log in again. Reinstalling Messenger also updates it to the latest version, which can also help get rid of known bugs.

8. Reset network settings

Do you have a stable internet connection? Is your data plan exhausted and is WiFi working? Cool. I think you should have already checked those things. That’s why I recommend that you reset your network settings. Because that will reset everything to default settings. Resetting network settings also helps resolve network-related issues. Keep in mind that it will delete all saved Wi-Fi passwords, so make a note of them somewhere safe first. Open Settings and tap Reset under General.

Here, tap Reset network settings and enter the passcode if prompted. Re-enter your Wi-Fi password and run Messenger to see if it’s working properly again.

9. Messenger Lite

Have you tried it yet? Messenger Lite offers much the same experience, but in a smaller package. It consumes less resources than its bigger sibling. Read our comparison between Facebook Messenger and Messenger Lite to learn more about the differences. Download Messenger Lite

Don’t kill the messenger

Facebook Messenger can be addicting especially with all games and others features it offers. That makes it even more frustrating when the app suddenly stops working. Hopefully one of the above solutions worked for you. How long will you stay on Messenger? Facebook admitted to hiring thousands of people to listen to the audio conversations shared through the Messenger. The next up Messenger isn’t the only way to keep in touch with others. Check out this in-depth comparison between Messenger and Skype.
