How to Auto-Convert Images to PNG Format in Mac – Guide

If you follow our site and have a Mac, you must have read our different posts about Automator and all the different things it can allow your Mac to do. And among the different aspects of Automator that we discussed earlier were Folder Actions.

Observation: Although Folder Actions are part of the purpose of Automator, you do not need Automator to use them. Folder actions are basically scripts that, once created, are attached to specific folders on your Mac, each of which allows exclusive actions that are triggered every time something happens to that folder, whether it is adding items to it, removing them and even when you open, close, or move that folder from its original location. For example, you can set Folder Actions to resize all images that go into a folder or receive an alert whenever an item is added to it, among other things. As you can see, Folder Actions have a lot of potential and can save you a lot of time if you know how to get around them, which is exactly the subject of this post. So, read on and find out what Folder Actions mean while we guide through a cool example showing you how to to define up Folder actions in a folder so that all images placed in it are converted to PNG image format.

Auto-convert images to a folder

Step 1: To begin, create a new folder where all your images will go. This will also be the destination folder where the converted images will be placed.

Step 2: Then, right-click on that folder and select Services from the menu. Then select Folder action configuration … to bring up up a new dialog box.

Step 3: In this dialog, you will find several predefined scripts with standard actions. From there, choose the Duplicate as PNG script and click the Attach button button.

You will see that the script is now attached to that folder in the left pane of the Folder Actions Configuration dialog.

Important note: If you want to disable or simply change a Folder Action, just open the dialog shown above, look for the Folder Action in the left pane and deselect it. Step 4: Now all you have to do is drag any image (not in PNG format obviously) to this folder and it will be immediately converted and stored in a subfolder, as the original image will be.

That’s what this is about. Now you know how to use the basic Folder Actions. Add to this that you can also use virtually any piece of custom script that you can write on your own or find online (just like many others found in Automator) and the possibilities are almost endless. Enjoy the time you save!
