Before we dive into custom Instagram highlights covers, let’s talk about Canva. Canva is a website and graphic design application for creating digital and print marketing materials. You have many templates, fonts and colors to choose from to allow for the best possible design.
How to create Instagram Highlights cover on Canva
Follow the steps below to create standout Instagram covers on your desktop and mobile.
Go to Canva.com or the Canva app.
Create an account if you don’t already have one or login. Click on create a design and search from the list provided or type ‘Instagram Story’ into the search bar. To be honest, you can use pretty much any size cover for your highlights, as you’ll be submitting it separately from your story, but that just makes things easier.
Choose a background color or photo
Choose one of Canva’s pre-selected colors or choose your own from the color picker. You can even add the color of your brand’s hexadecimal code. For photos, you can choose a Canva stock image, link your Instagram account or upload your own. (I also recommend using Unsplash or Pexels for stock funds)
Add Elements
Add lines, icons, boxes, circles…you name it! In the example here, I searched by photo and added a camera Icon. Canva has hundreds of free icons to choose from or many premium options if you subscribe up for a membership.
Download your image as a PNG or JPG.
From here, if you are using a computer, I recommend putting it on the air for your phone or uploading to Dropbox and downloading to your phone.
