While Google AMP provides some benefits, if you want to stop it, one of these techniques should suffice. Accelerated Mobile Pages, or AMP, is a program by Google that tries to reduce the time it takes for web pages to load mobile devices. It is an open source HTML framework that removes most JavaScript, some CSS styles, and other items that can slow down a website’s loading speed. Today, we will look at the advantages and disadvantages of Google AMP, as well as how to disable it.
How to Disable AMP in Google Search
Most users with a spotty internet connection might like AMP. But there is absolutely no reason why users with high speed internet should be forced to view the simplified version of a web page. To make matters worse, Google doesn’t offer any way to disable it in their search engine. However, if you find AMP annoying, here are some workarounds you can use to disable it.
1. Use a different search engine
Google AMP, as the name implies, is a Google product. So, you can completely remove Google AMP using a different search engine. Some of the best alternatives to Google are Microsoft Bing and DuckDuckGo. These search engines do not force AMP versions of the websites for their users. You can also try Yahoo, which is one of the oldest search engines, and its search results don’t include AMP web pages either. As you can see, the Google search result has a lightning bolt icon next to it, which means it is an AMP link. On the other hand, other search engines will direct you to non-AMP mobile locations.
2. Try a new browser
At the time of writing, Google Chrome does not have the option to disable AMP. So if you want to block AMP, your best bet is to try a different browser. You have many options here, but we are going to discuss the most effective ones. Mozilla Firefox is one of the best browsers out there. It has many flavors like Stable, Beta, Nightly and Focus. All these versions of Firefox natively disable AMP without you having to do anything. DuckDuckGo browser also displays non-AMP mobile websites by default. For Android users, Kiwi Browser is another option worth trying. You will find an option to Remove AMP in the Settings > Privacy menu.
3. Switch to desktop view
This option is available in all existing browsers. The option name may be slightly different, but the results will be the same. AMP is a technology applicable to mobile just websites. So you can get rid of AMP by switching to desktop mode instead of mobile. You can do this in Chrome by tapping the three dots in the top right corner and checking the desktop website.
4. Use “i” to switch to non-AMP Mobile Place
All the methods mentioned above are quite intrusive and require you to make significant changes. Nobody likes change. So, there is a method you can use to disable Google AMP, which applies to Chrome and Google Search. Whenever you open an AMP site, you will see an i icon in the upper left corner of the screen. If you tap on it, it shows a link. Tapping this link will redirect you to non-AMP mobile place.
