Guide: How to Filter Tags on Tumblr
Undoubtedly, Tumblr is right up one of the craziest places on the internet. You get all sorts of crazy stuff on your endlessly scrolling dashboard that can range from clever political satire to the latest movie spoilers. And needless to say, some of them can stick to you for hours or be downright irritating. Yes, the appeal of Tumblr lies in the fact that you never know what to expect, but can you do something about those posts that you really don’t like? Fortunately, you can. Tumblr uses tags to categorize posts and most things are based on followed blogs and searches. But instead of unfollowing them, you can use the tags to filter that certain types of posts don’t ruin your day. So without further ado, let’s take a look at how to do that. But first, let’s take a look at how Tag Filtering works.
How tag filtering works
As with any other tagging system, Tumblr keeps things pretty simple. Those posting content can add relevant tags or create tags from scratch to match what people are looking for. Either way, blogs you actively follow can prompt Tumblr to pump out posts related to tags that you never want to see anywhere in your dashboard feed. To keep this from becoming a problem, Tumblr implemented a filtering system a while ago. Filtering a tag automatically blocks all posts that contain the same tag, even if other tags are added.
Blocked messages aren’t necessarily hidden, though – you can still see placeholders on your dashboard. If you want, you can just click or tap View Post button to open the message in the dashboard sidebar. Very useful if the posts come from a blog you know and love. Very intuitive, right? When it comes to tag filtering, Tumblr lets you do that on a desktop, as well as on Android and iOS mobile apps. But do not worry. Your changes are synchronized so you don’t have to repeat your actions across platforms. If you’re not sure which tags to filter, check the bottom of an annoying post for the full list of associated tags. Use your intuition to determine the tag to block. For example, if you see both the #starwars and #starwars spoilers tags in one post, choose the latter to avoid missing out on Star Wars posts that don’t actually contain spoilers.
Block tags on desktop
On a desktop, filter tags require a short visit to the Settings panel. Any changes to the dashboard feed are immediately reflected. Step 1: On the Tumblr dashboard, click the account icon and then click Settings.
Step 2: Click the pencil-shaped Edit icon under the Filter section, then add the tag you want to block. When you are done, click Add button Note: Don’t enter the number sign (#) – Tumblr will automatically fill it in for you. Step 3. Insert any other tags you want to block and go back to the dashboard. All messages related to the filtered tags should now be hidden. Note: While you’re at it, you can also block Not Safe For Work (NSFW) messages by turning on the toggle next to Safe Mode.
Filter tags by Mobile
Your filtered tags on the desktop should immediately sync with mobileHowever, you can still add tags to the list quite easily from Tumblr’s Android or iOS apps. Step 1: On the Tumblr mobile app, tap the account icon. On the next screen, tap the gear-shaped settings icon. Note: On the iOS version, you must first select one of your blogs before you can see the Settings icon. It doesn’t matter which blog you choose.
Step 2: Tap the option labeled General Settings, then tap Filter.
Step 3: Tap the + New option then enter the tag you want to filter in the popupup box. Repeat for any other tags you want to block, then go back to the dashboard.
Note: Just like on the desktop, you can block the display of Not Safe For Work (NSFW) content up by turning on the switch next to Safe mode.
Unfollow annoying blogs
Sometimes you receive a lot of annoying messages because you followed the wrong blog. And of course, you can’t just rely on tag filtering to stop seeing them. So why not consider unfollowing the blog? It’s either that or losing better posts with similar tags from other blogs. If you’re brave enough to make that decision, simply click on the blog’s username from within a post. You should then see the blog loading on the side of the dashboard. Just click Unfollow and you should be good. Note: On mobile, you must tap the profile icon to up the Unfollow option.
Take good care of your dashboard
The ability to filter or block tags is one of the best, but relatively unknown, features on Tumblr. Once you’ve added some of the worst tags, you don’t have to worry about seeing stupid messages or surprises on your dashboard. So what are you waiting for? Start blocking them tags!
