Guide: How to Make Internet Browsing Safe for Children
The Internet is a very powerful tool. There are many useful resources, and it is generally a wealth of knowledge. With that being said, not everything on the Internet is safe or positive. This is especially true for children. Live free… | Shutterstock To illustrate the tools we’ll explore today how to make surfing the world wide web friendly to children. This includes both keeping them safe and making the process easier for them, especially in the case of younger children.
Zoodles Kid Zone
Zoodles Kid Zone provides both a fun and educational experience for kids while still keeping them safe. Parental controls are available and the content provided has been carefully selected by the Zoodles team. The app is intended for children aged 8 and under. Note: Zoodles Kid Zone is available for PC, Mac and Android devices. You can download it here. There is also an iOS app in the works. Regardless of your device, Kid Zone works much the same across the board. Parents will of course have to sign up for an account on Zoodles and then they can access the parental dashboard. From the parental dashboard, you can change your account settings such as password, time zone, notification settings, and what your kids call you under My Account.
The Our Family tab allows you to add other adults to your child’s account.
Family members you add can see pictures drawn by your kids, send video messages to your kids, and record videos of themselves reading Zoodles classic storybooks to your kids. Next, let’s talk about the tab with your child’s name. If you click on the Add child tab on the right, you can add another child to your account.
In this tab, you can do the following from the Overview subtab:
View and edit your child’s profile View / upgrade your current subscription status Check out your child’s available storybooks View your child’s art View an overview of your child’s learning activities over a period of a week or a period of 30 days Watch your child’s most popular games, sites, and shows over a one-week or a 30-day period
Under Art you can revisit your child’s artwork, but here you can add gold stars to the pieces to better keep track of your favorites.
Under Books you can view the books that are available and you can record a lecture.
Videomail allows you to manage your child’s video mail. You can set whether to allow them to send video mail or not.
Progress report shows you the topics your child has covered over a one week or a 30 day period.
Browse Content You can browse the available content categories and see the amount of time your child has spent on a specific category over a one week or 30 day period.
With Education and Parental Controls, you can view and edit the content that can be viewed by your children.
Now let’s move on to the Zoodles Kid Zone Browser. I will demonstrate the version for PC. The Mac version should be pretty much the same as the one running on Adobe Air.
The Games tab is a collection of videos and games, while the Art tab allows your child to create drawings.
Books lets your child view and read available books, Mail lets you manage video mail, and Favorites displays the content your child likes the most. The Android version of Kid Zone works a bit differently. It’s finished up like a launcher where you click the home button to start Kid Zone.
The interface is a bit more attractive on Android, but the same content is available through tabs labeled Videos, Games, Books, and Drawing. The Favorites tab loves the Videos and Games tabs themselves.
With Zoodles Kid Zone, parents have complete control over the content available to their children and can monitor how the browser is used on different devices. Nor is it difficult to use the browser that makes it accessible to children. There is a lot of free video and game content available, but if you want access to a wide variety of books for your kids, consider subscribing to the premium content plan that Zoodles offers.

Kiddle.co has a team of editors who ensure that the returned results are child safe in conjunction with Google’s safe search results. The following screenshot shows how Kiddle returns search results. Safe search | Fishing net As you can see, Kiddle’s goal isn’t just to keep kids safe on the Internet. It also prioritizes materials that are easier for children to understand. Search results are displayed with a large font and thumbnail, making it easier to sort through the results.
Kiddle also offers good advice to parents and educators on how to be safe here on the Internet. These are good general rules to follow.
Necta Launcher
Necta Launcher is an Android launcher that displays everything simply with large icons and text. It makes navigating Android easy for both the elderly and children.
For example on the home screen shown in the screenshot above, it is fairly easy to do an internet search directly from there by clicking on the magnifying glass.
While this well-designed interface makes navigating Android and the web easy for kids, it doesn’t do anything in particular to protect them from content that isn’t suitable for them.
Conclusion
All three tools reviewed have something to offer to make browsing kid-friendly. Using Zoodles Kid Zone brings kid-friendly content straight to your child without you having to bother looking for it. Kiddle allows your kids to search the web safely and Necta Launcher makes navigating the Android landscape really easy. READ ALSO: How to Childproof your Android with Kaspersky Parental Control
