Guide: How to recover a Google Account

There are several Google services and products that billion internet users enjoy without paying directly for them. From Search to Maps, YouTube, Gmail and several others – almost all of them are free. More interestingly, you only need one account to access all Google services. But what happens if this account is disabled by Google? Are you losing access to all of its products? Can you still use some of them? And how do you recover a disabled Google account? We explain it all in this article.

Why Google is disabling an account

There are many reasons why Google disables a user’s account, and we’ll cover everything below. In short, if you use your Google Account (or any of Google’s services) for activities that violate Google’s policies and Terms of Service, the account will be disabled. Some such activities include (but are not limited to):

  1. Spamming: Using your account to send or distribute unsolicited and unwanted content (emails, reviews, comments, photos, etc.) on any of its services is considered spam and may result in Google disabling your account.

  2. False Identity / Deception: Creating and using an account under false pretenses on any of its services may cause the account to be disabled.

Creating an account claiming to be someone who is not you violates the Google Terms of Service (ToS). The only exception that Google finds is the creation of a celebrity fan account.

  3. Promotion of Violent Content: Using your Google account to share content that incites violence, sexual abuse and terrorism on any of its services may also result in temporary or permanent closure (of the account). Other notable reasons why Google disables accounts include using its services for malicious purposes such as phishing, account hijacking, etc. You can find out why Google accounts have been disabled on the Google Account Help page. Interestingly, a Google account can also be disabled for some weird reasons such as changing your password while logging in to a new computer or simply using your Google account on another computer – as reported by this Google – users in the Gmail community.

In general, only Google knows the exact reason why it is disabling an account. However, it usually revolves around any activity that it considers a violation of its policies and ToS.

What happens if the Google account is disabled

Once Google disables your account, or notifies you that your account has been disabled (they always do), you will no longer be able to access all of Google’s services and products associated with the disabled account. Notification of the decision to disable your account is usually sent by email or text message – if you have a phone number associated with your Google account. Whenever you sign in to one of the Google services with the disabled account, you will get an error that the account has been disabled. You will also be asked to go to the Google Accounts Help page to find out why your account was disabled and how to recover it.

What will happen to your data

When your account is disabled, it is temporary – at least in the early stages. Google allows you to restore a disabled account for that time, files and data associated with the account will remain temporarily inaccessible. However, you need to act quickly if you ever want your data. The disabled accounts will eventually be removed from the Google server. Guess whatever gets deleted? The account information. All emails, photos, videos, contacts, Google Drive files and any other data stored under the account. Everything will be deleted.

If you can prove to Google that you haven’t violated the terms of service or usage policy, the account (along with the data) will be reactivated and restored. And how do you do that? We will explain that below.

Recover a disabled Google account

When you sign in to the account that has been disabled, tap ‘Try to restore’ button to file an account recovery request.

You must then enter an e-mail address on which the result of the appeal will be communicated. And finally, you will be asked to enter your appeal request in a box provided for that purpose. Note: Use an alternate email address that is active and not disabled. Otherwise, you will not be able to receive updates on your appeal request. You can also go to the Google account recovery / appeal page and fill out the form on the page with the necessary details. It usually takes approximately two business days for Google to process and respond to your appeal request. Some users have reported that it took up up to 5 days, while some took a little longer. During the appeal, Google will review both your account and its content to determine whether your account needs to be restored or not. The result of the appeal will be communicated to you by e-mail. Note: The outcome of your appeal is final and cannot be further challenged. You also cannot appeal a second time.

Follow the rules

Now that you know why Google sometimes disables an account and what happens after an account is disabled, be careful about how and where you use your Google account – on your device and other devices. Don’t violate Google’s Terms of Service or use policies for its products and don’t worry. The next up: Want to delete photos and videos from Google Photos on Android, iOS or the web?
