Ubuntu LTS Release 22.04 The long-planned release of the Canonical Linux operating system is called Jammy Jellyfish. Here are methods for individuals who want to try it out without losing their existing Ubuntu 20.04 installation. Warning: as Ubuntu 22.04 is still under development, please do not upgrade your production system. This is for testing purposes only. Also, before starting the upgrade process, back up your vital data. This guide is based on Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa, which runs on Windows 11 or 10 WSL 2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux), but will also run on a regular 20.04 LTS virtual machine or PC /Laptop.

Now that the Ubuntu 20.40.1 LTS release is available, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS users have the option to upgrade to 20.04 LTS or keep the existing version (18.04 is supported until 2023). Updating before April 23
This section was written before the final release and as of April 23, it is no longer needed. If you updated to 20.04 before April 23, you do NOT need to reinstall anything to get the ‘final’version. Continue installing any pending software updates and you’re done. To force the update to Ubuntu 20.04, run: sudo do-release-upgrade -d This command checks for a new development release, disables all third-party PPAs, and rewrites your system’s apt list to point to focal development branches (from where it fetches the updated packages needed to complete its upgrade). do not press any other button(s) after issuing the command. Wait to calculate changes. If your Internet connection is reliable, proceed as instructed. If you decide to decline the upgrade when prompted, you MUST reactivate the bionic (18.04) or eoan (19.10) repositories manually. This is NOT done automatically. Most of the update happens automatically, which means you don’t have to do anything but wait (and watch every line passing you in the terminal). That said, don’t abandon your system entirely as, depending on your configuration, you might need to press Y or N to approve the overwriting of odd packets at some point during the process (and it won’t change until you do). Once this is done, just reboot your system when prompted to enjoy the updated Focal Fossa experience firsthand.
