Guide: How to Use Story Highlights on Facebook
Facebook followed in Instagram’s footsteps and introduced Stories. The disappearing stories are fascinating. Then there are highlights to give you endless stories. Facebook has also added the same feature. It almost works like this on Instagram. There is a slight difference from Facebook’s highlights, however. Do you wonder how to use them? That’s why we’ve put together a guide on Facebook highlights. Let’s start.
What are Facebook Stories Highlights
Highlights are like photo albums in which you can sort stories in different folders based on their content. You can add a cover photo and title highlights. Like stories, even highlights are played as a slideshow.
Highlights are created using a story archive feature which acts as a store of the disappearing stories that have reached the 24-hour time limit of life. The story archive is private and not visible to anyone else. If you want to reuse those expired stories, you can add them to Highlights to make them visible to others. Once you add your stories to Highlights, they will stay on your profile forever. Now that you’re familiar with highlights let’s take a look at how to use them.
Where you can make stories
While Facebook and Messenger stories are cross-posted by default, you can only create highlights on Facebook. Those highlights are also not accessible on Messenger.
Only, for now, mobile apps make it possible to create and view highlights.
Make highlights
There are a few ways to create new highlights. Let’s take a look at them all.
From stories
After publishing a story, launch the Facebook app and tap the Your Story option under Stories. That opens your last story. Tap the marker icon in the lower right corner.
From the pop-up, tap New marker to create a new one. Give it a name, assign a cover photo and click Save.
From Story Archive
As long as story archive feature is enabled, you can create highlights at any time. Follow these steps to create a story from archives: Step 1: Open the Facebook app and tap the View Archive option in the top right corner in the Stories box.
Step 2: The app will take you to the Your Story Archive screen. Tap the three dots icon in the top right corner and select Create Highlight.
Step 3: Select the photos you want to add to your highlight and tap Done.
Step 4: On the Add Story Marker screen, add a name, select a cover photo, and then tap Save.
Or, from the Your Story Archive screen, tap the story to open it. Then tap the Mark icon like you did in the previous method.
From your profile
Go to the profile screen on it mobile apps. Scroll down to the Story Highlights section. Tap Add New to create a new highlight. Then select Stories and name the highlight.
Add stories to existing highlights.
You can do this in a number of ways. If the story is live, open the story and tap the Mark icon. Here, tap on the existing marker you want to add the story to. Follow the same steps to access the story under the archived stories i.e. open the story and tap the Mark icon followed by selecting the marker.
To add from your profile screen, tap and hold the marker and select Edit story marker. On the next screen, tap Add more and choose the stories you want to add.
Add stories to multiple highlights
Unlike Instagram where a story can only be posted in one highlight, you can add a story to multiple highlights on Facebook. To do this, go to your profile and scroll down to the Highlights section of the story. You can add stories to multiple highlights, just like a single story.
Remove story from a highlight.
There are two ways to do this.
Method 1
On your profile screen, tap the highlight from which you want to remove a story. Then navigate to the story you want to delete and click on the three dots icon in the top right corner. Select Remove from the marker.
Method 2
Tap and hold the highlight with the story you want to delete and select Edit Story Highlight. On the next screen, uncheck the story you want to delete and tap Save.
Edit Highlight title and cover
You can assign unique names and cover images to your highlights. To do this, follow these steps: Step 1: Tap and hold the marker on your profile screen to get the edit story marker option.
Step 2: On the Edit Story Marker screen, enter a name under Edit Name and tap the image under Edit Cover to change the cover photo. Unlike Instagram, where you can add cover photos from a gallery, the feature is currently missing from Facebook. So you just need to select one from stories.
Remove highlights
To remove a highlight from your profile, tap and hold the highlight you want to edit. From the options you get, tap Remove Flag. Note: Deleting highlights will not delete stories from your archives.
Privacy settings
The privacy settings for Facebook Highlights are different from Stories. You can adjust them individually. To do this, tap and hold a highlight. Then select Edit Story Marker. From the Edit Story Marker screen, tap the Settings icon at the top. You will be taken to Marker Settings. Choose a relevant privacy setting here. Note: If you change the privacy settings for a particular highlight, the changes are applied to all highlights.
Story highlights don’t work.
If you cannot create highlights, you should check whether the story archive feature is enabled or not. To do this, follow these steps: Step 1: On the Facebook app home screen, tap the option See Archive.
Step 2: Then tap the three dots icon in the top right corner and select Settings from the menu.
Step 3: Make sure the option Save to archive is checked.
Are highlights useful?
Of course. While highlights are somewhat contrary to the transient nature of stories, they serve one purpose: to extend the life of stories. First, all those great stories are visible for more than a day, as long as you want. Second, you can organize your stories into folders using highlights. On Instagram, stories are productive for brands because they can show their products. However, currently, Facebook pages do not support highlights as they are only available for personal profiles.
