Adobe Exchange includes a good selection of paid and free plugins. The library ranges from unique filters to plug-ins that integrate stock photo libraries directly into the software.
Downloading plugins from there is quite easy, just select the plugin you want to download, click on the free / buy button, and the plug-in is automatically installed in Photoshop. Simple, right? Now let’s move on to plugins you download from third party websites.
Install Photoshop plugins
The plug-ins downloaded from other websites are available as executable files or as compressed zip files. Depending on the file type, you can install them in two different ways:
Install the Photoshop plugin with an executable file
Follow these simple steps to install plugins using executable files: Step 1: Make sure Photoshop is not running on your computer. Now run the executable to open up the installation wizard.
Step 2: Click Next and agree to the license agreement in the next window.
Step 3: Click the check box in the next window to select which version of the plug-in you want to install and click Next.
Since I am using 64-bit Windows, I selected the 64-bit version. But depending on your computer’s configuration, you may need to select the 32-bit version instead. Step 4: Select the destination folder where you want to install the plug-in, then click Next.
Step 5: Finally, click Install, and once the installation is complete, click Finish to complete the installation.
Now start Photoshop and your newly installed plug-in will appear in one of the menu options (depending on the type of plug-in you have installed). Since I installed a filter, the plugin appears at the bottom right of the filter menu.
The vast majority of plugins now come with an installation wizard, so you will likely use this method to install the plugin. However, if the plugin doesn’t have an executable file, then you can follow the next method to install it in Photoshop.
Install the Photoshop plugin from the compressed zip file
Follow these simple steps to install plugins from Zip files: Step 1: Extract the contents of the zip file into a folder.
Step 2: Copy the plug-in file and paste it into the Photoshop Plug-ins folder. The folder is located in Program Files or in the location where you installed Photoshop on your system.
Step 3: Restart Photoshop and the plug-in should appear in one of the menu options, depending on the type of plug-in you have installed. Again, since I installed a filter, the plugin appears at the bottom of the filter menu.
The methods listed above should work without a hitch if you’re using Adobe Photoshop CC, if you’re using an older version of Photoshop, you may need to go through an extra step while installing plugins. In older versions of Photoshop, you must first give it permission to install third-party plugins. To do this, go to the Edit menu and select Plugins from the Preferences option.
In the Plug-ins window, check the box next to Additional plug-ins and then install the plug-ins. This dialog is not included in the latest version of Photoshop.
