Guide: Setting up Onedrive Personal Vault: Guide

Microsoft recently released Personal Vault, a telltale and highly anticipated one feature for OneDrive users. A personal safe is meant to keep your important files safe. I’ve been waiting for this for a while. No other cloud storage, to my knowledge, offers such feature now. But how do you set up OneDrive Vault and Why You Need to Secure It? That’s what we’ll look at today. The importance of taking every precaution to protect your data cannot be overstated. That’s why OneDrive also comes with ransomware protection. Let’s start.

1. Set up up A disc

The first thing you will do is download and install OneDrive or install the latest version from the Windows Store. Open the Windows Store and search for OneDrive to install. If you already have it, click the menu to select Downloads and Updates.

You will see OneDrive if you don’t already have the latest version. Do the same for it mobile apps and download or update to the latest version on Android and iOS.

Launch OneDrive and you should see a new folder called Personal Vault. Instead of the regular folder icon, it has an animated vault icon.

Windows 10’s system-wide dark mode does not work in OneDrive. Maybe with a future update. Okay, let’s take a look at that OneDrive personal vault. Wait, I see an error.

At first I thought they were talking about a view. So I maximized the window like an idiot, but it’s not. You need to click on the OneDrive folder in the file explorer to start and set up the sync process up the OneDrive folder. That’s the OneDrive app we use.

You will now see a pop-up where you follow the onscreen instructions to sign in to your Microsoft account, the same account you use on your Windows 10 computer.

You will be asked to choose a location for the OneDrive folder.

This is what the folder looks like, complete with system-wide dark mode.

To access the personal vault you need 2FA – the same one you used for your Windows account.

The personal vault opens in a new window by default.

2. How to Set up 2FA for Windows

You should set up 2FA for your computer. Without it, your data stored in the safe is vulnerable to theft. Even if you don’t use the personal safe feature from OneDrive, you still need to use 2FA on Windows. Sign in to your Microsoft account using the link below. Select Two-step verification under Security.

You can enable 2FA under the Two-step verification option.

I have set 2FA for my system. When you click on it, you will be prompted to re-enter your Microsoft account password and scan a QR code. You can use any 2FA app for that. Then follow the on-screen instructions, which are quite simple and easy. Don’t forget to write down backup codes in a safe place. Preferably offline. Note that you can also use a fingerprint as your laptop supports it or a pin code. Here’s a neat one trick – use a different type of 2FA for OneDrive Personal Vault than what you use for OneDrive. That way, the vault is safe and inaccessible even if OneDrive is compromised. Visit the Microsoft sign-up page

3. OneDrive Personal Vault Security and Features

Here are a few things you should know about the personal safe. It works just like any other folder in OneDrive, so you can copy, paste or drag files to it. It is available on the web, desktop and mobiles Your personal vault is automatically locked after 20 minutes of inactivity on a desktop and 3 minutes before mobile apps. You will be notified before and after that happens. Handy when you work in an open office environment where everyone has your laptopYou also cannot share anything from the Personal Vault. You will have to move it outside the safe for that.

You have to verify with 2FA every time whether you are signed in to Windows and OneDrive or not. Some people may find it cumbersome, but that’s why Personal Vault was created. Why else would you have it? You can scan documents directly to the Personal Vault using Microsoft Office Lens.

The data stored in OneDrive’s personal vault is stored on a disk area encrypted by Bitlocker. Bitlocker also uses AES encryption with both 128-bit and 256-bit keys, which is the standard protocol. Although I am not a fan of Bitlocker as it is not easy to set up up and is a closed program, personal safe makes it easy for you.

4. Turn off Personal Vault

If you turn off OneDrive’s personal vault, all files stored in it will be deleted. So make sure that these files are no longer usable, or make a backupup in a safe place. Go to OneDrive web and under Settings, click Options.

You may be asked to verify your identity using the 2FA method you previously set above. Click on Disable next to Disable Personal Vault and confirm.

Lock it, forget it

You cannot store more than three files in the OneDrive personal vault in the free plan. To save more, you need Office 365 plans that start at $ 5 per month. Not too expensive when you consider that you get access to a large number of Microsoft apps and a bit more cloud storage. Extra security features including file recovery for up up to 30 days and protection against ransomware. The next up Do you want to save photos and videos to OneDrive?
